G3VGR Hochschwarzwald   -   Lothenbachklamm & Falkauer Wasserfall

I felt brighter on waking and decided another easy day was called for, so I decided to walk the Lothenbachklamm, another of the Wutachschlucht's side canyons. During my Schluchtensteig hike in 2012, I walked down the Lothenbachklamm, but was in a hurry at the time, so have only vague memories of the gorge. After a leisurely breakfast in the bakery at Titisee station on the way to Neustadt, I caught the 7258 bus at 9AM to the Gündelwangen-Lotenbachklamm stop. There were a few other hikers on the bus and we all disembarked at the same stop on the B315 road opposite the top entrance to the Lothenbachklamm. At the start of the downhill path, the Lothenbach initially flows leisurely between large granite rocks with a few small cascades. I lingered here for a while, taking photographs, until all the other hikers had made their way further down the gorge. There wasn't a great flow of water and although the scenery was quite wild and romantic, I missed having no noisy accompaniment of rushing water. I imagine the Lothenbachklamm would be most interesting after heavy rainfall and perhaps somewhat dangerous with the possibile risk of landslides, rockfalls and trees falling as demonstrated by much debris in the stream. The trail crossed over the Lothenbach a few times on its way downhill to the Wutach, passing more cascades. Despite the hot weather, there were many wet boulders to negotiate that blocked the trail and I had to take care as it was quite slippery underfoot in places. Further down, I reached some steep metal steps which led down past two big waterfalls where some children were playing. Shortly after the waterfalls the path became level and easy and I quickly reached the end of the Lothenbachlamm, arriving at the Wanderparkplatz Schattenmühle. As today was Sunday, the car park was full and dozens of hikers were around. The Wutachschlucht would be very busy today. Fortunately, I had already walked it before in both directions, so had no reason to go along there today. It was only 1130, so the walk down the gorge hadn't taken long and I needed to decide how to spend the rest of the day. Lunch at the Schattenmühle was discounted as an option as I was never impressed by the food there. Fortunately a hikers bus arrived five minutes later and took me, the only passenger, to Löffingen. From there, I took a bus to Neustadt. I hadn't been too impressed by my walk through the Lothenbachklamm, so over a beer at the Imbiss, I decided to spend the afternoon by visiting the Falkauer Wasserfall

Located near the ski resort of VorderFalkau, the Falkauer waterfall isn't well known even in the Black Forest. The 7257 bus dropped me off at the Saig Rotkreutz bus stop by a lonely crossroads. My destination was a 5Km walk away and I set off along a farm track. It was very hot and sunny again and I had forgotten to bring my hat. Fortunately much of the trail was through forest. This was an easy and pleasant walk, alternating between forest and meadows and was well signposted. One forest area of firs was very impressive, having thick green moss covering all the ground between the trees. On reaching Vorderfalkau, I followed the signs through a few residential roads until reaching a steep downhill path covered in foxgloves. I could already hear the sound of the waterfall and descended into a narrow gorge. Arriving at the river Haslach, I was pleased to find Nature had provided a suitable boulder on which I could sit and eat my lunch while admiring a beautiful cascade. So far, I had seen nobody since starting the walk. After lunch, I followed the Haslach about 20 metres upstream to the impressive Falkauer Wasserfall. I do really like waterfalls that are almost hidden in deep dark gorges, surrounded by mossy rocks and ferns. This one was no exception. Over two steps, the Haslach crashes into a large whirlpool. There used to be wooden steps leading up to the top of the waterfall, but these had been destroyed during a winter storm, so I was unable to easily continue upstream. Instead, I retraced my way back out of the gorge to Vorderfalkau, then followed signs to Falkau. This was another pleasant walk along a wooded path named "Erich Fink Weg", which mainly followed a stream and I had some shade against the hot sun from the trees, but not much. After a couple of kilometres, I reached a large pond and a crazy golf feature. The Minigolfplatz had a refreshment hut, so I stopped there to savour a cold beer. This was a great improvement over the contents of my water bottle which had become quite tepid. Now feeling suitably refreshed, I continued along a flat gravel path for a couple of miles which wound its way through a boggy area. This area was quite pretty and enjoyable, despite being in direct sunshine all the time. As well as providing a refuge for waterfowl the area also was home to many nasty biting insects who greeted me in their inimitable manner. Just over a mile further, the walk terminated at Altglashütten railway station. The next train to Hinterzarten wasn't due for another hour and fortunately the station has a small restaurant, the Bistro Express, so I set on the terrace and had a couple of Hefeweizens before the train arrived. The food being served to other customers looked really good, so I made a mental note to return here at a later date for dinner. I really enjoyed the afternoon walk to the Falkauer Wasserfall, especially as I was alone for all of the walk unlike the busy Lothenbachklamm.
