G3TYR

On the Web

My name is Keith Davis and have been a licensed Radio Amateur (G3TYR) since 1964. My current hobbies include Computing, Electronics, Microcontrollers and Radio Communications. I have also started to research my Family tree and am enjoying Genealogy.

Due to health reasons, I am being forced into semi retirement and will be moving to the Lincolnshire area early 2002. I hope to find more time to pursue my hobbies then.

I will be slowly adding to this site, as time permits, and hope to bring it up to a level useful to a wide section of taste's. Computing, Communications and Electronics figure high on my list and these are some area's which will be featured.

One thing I am often asked is "how much RAM do I need" The answer is usually "as much as you can afford". My experience is the more RAM you can apply to a PC, the better and faster it will perform. This is especially true of todays modern PC and the applications it is expected to handle. As of January 2002, I would consider 256 Meg to be a good target. Yes, it will run with less, but do try a PC which has more RAM and see what I mean.

I have used Macromedia Dreamweaver 3.0 to develop this site and whilst not venturing too deep, it has allowed me to get this site up. I used one of the self help books "Teach yourself Macromedia Dreamweaver 3 in 24 hours". Thats 24 one hour lessons! It looks a great book and if the other book in the series I bought (HTML in 24 Hours) is anything to go by, then I have high hopes for this one. I have already skipped forward to the 'Site' tools and that makes managing Web Sites and all those loose files so much easier. I'm having a bit of trouble with the cascading Style Sheets though! I have not used Frames or Layers yet and they might come in future updates. One of the problems with advanced and extended HTML is that older browsers cannot handle the new extensions. I don't, however, know of anyone using anything older than IE 3.0. Once I can be happy that this is general, I might start using those advanced features which are at present holding me back.
