Shirley DOWN was born in 1941.26. Richard (Dick) DOWN
(4) was born on 6 Feb 1919 in Finchley,
London N12. He died on 30 May 1942 in Tobruck (Middle East). Dick was killed
by enemy action whilst serving in Tobruck in WWII
He is buried in the War Graves Commission Cemetry at Tobruck, Plot 1; Row G;
Grave 12
This following quote from 'The History of the Queens Bays' (The 2nd Dragoon Guards)
1929 - 1945 by Major General W. R. Beddington CBE gives slightly differing dates:-
28th March
The next morning a feint attack by the 10th Hussars to test the enemy defenses
bought an immediate response from the enemy artillery.
A great many shells fell on the Regimental Echelon, Troopers Down and Every were
killed and trooper Trim wounded.
After dark there were reports of the enemy withdrawing from El Hamma....................
