International Marconi Day (IMD) 25th April 1998 A report on the activities of the Amateur Radio Section of the SPR & IW Community Club. Technical A 15m ¼ wave vertical was erected on a 12ft pole, and a 20 m ¼ wave vertical was erected on a 32ft pole, supported by guys. Both had ¼ wave ground radials at approx. 40-60 degrees below horizontal. Those 2 antennas plus a 150ft long wire (average height 15ft) plus ATU were used with a Yaseu FT101ZD and Kenwood TS680S. Activity which started at 00:00hrs UTC was on 80m and 20m, going quiet in the early hours, then improving on 80m and then 20m. 40m and 15m were used as warranted. There was some de sensing of the FT101 on 80m (long wire) when the TS680 was Txing on 15m or 20m, and on the TS680, 20dB attenuator had to be used to reduce splatter when the FT101 was Txing on 80m. Contacts made About 400 contacts were made in about 20 hours of operation, including 10 other 'Marconi stations' e.g. Pepperbox hill, New York, New Jersey, Cape Cod, Rome, Poldhu, Potters Bar, and Caenarfon.
