On 6th December 1897 the 'Worlds First Permanent Wireless Station' started transmission. It was located in the grounds of the Needles Hotel, Alum Bay, Isle of Wight, UK, IO90FQ, SZ307854. It first transmitted to a tug in Alum bay, then to a fixed receiver at Madeira House, South Cliff, Bournemouth. The transmitter was a spark-gap in the secondary circuit of an induction coil, connected directly to vertical aerial 120 ft high. To celebrate this centenary, the Amateur radio section of the SPR & Isle of Wight Community Club (GX3IW) will be operating from Northwood Primary School (IO90IR, SZ485932) on 6th December 1997 from 09:30 to 17:00 utc. The callsign used will be GB4JAM, and operation will be on HF and 2m. News of this station was passed to Princess Elettra Marconi, who noted the connection with her Grand Mother.
