Transatlantic Times Centenary The Amateur Radio section of the Isle of Wight Community Club operated a Special Event station on 14th and 15th November 1999 to commemorate the centenary of the Worlds first Newspaper published at sea using wireless. The original wireless transmissions took place from The Royal Needles Hotel on the 15th November 1899. The Special Event callsign used (issued by The RSGB) was GB4JAM. Approximately 50 stations were contacted, mostly in the UK. Operation was on 14th 5 to 6pm, and 15th from 2 to 7pm. Bands used 2m fm, 15 and 80m ssb. Non UK contacts were 1 each on 15m Italy, 80m Germany, 80m France, 15m Spain and 2 on 15m USA. Radios used were FT920, FT101ZD, TS680s and IC706. Antennas used, on 15m 1/4 wave vertical, on 80m manual ATU and long wire, on 2m 4 ele vertical beam pointing northish. The 'JAM' in the callsign relates to Captain Jamison on SS St Paul, the ship on which the 'Transatlantic Times' was produced, and to Mr. Jameson-Davis who was at The Royal Needles Hotel.
