All part can be purcashed at radio shack for a (un)reasonable price. I
had some parts on hand, so my black boxes have come out to about $6 each.
What I've done is taken a DB-9 Female and put it on some SHIELDED cable
going back to a Radio Shack 3 x 2 x 1" project box ($1.99), on the same
side the audio commes in / out. The audio consist of a little mono patch
cord choped in half ($2.69 @ RS). I mounted a DB-15 Female ($1.79) one
the opposite side of the box. On the back I placed velcro. The inside is
a relativly messy circut made on some scrap perf board. Here is a complete
radio shack parts listing. If you don't often show off you shack, then
just use point to point wiring on the back of your serial port connector.
Strain relief where needed using hot melt glue. If you go for this simpiler
approach then you should be able to get out of rat shack for $4 or so.
I typicaly have everything except the mosfet around the shack. Oh yeah,
be careful with the mosfet (and any mosfet for that matter) as it is a
static sensitive device.
