About Conway Reef:

Ceva – I – Ra  ( Theva – I – Ra)   at 2144` S , 17438` E

Known as CONWAY REEF until 1976, lies 270 miles SW of Viti Levu; it is under the jurisdiction of the Government of Fiji.

The Reef was originally named after HMS Conway, Captain Drinkwater Bethune, who confirmed its existence in 1838. It was surveyed in 1856 by captain Denham in HMS Herald.

Topography
Ceva – I – Ra consists of a reef about 1,5 miles long lying in an E/W direction and on it lies a sand cay. About 5 cables long and 1 – 5 m high. In 1983, there were some palm trees, about 2m in height, and Few scattered bushes on it, but it would appear that the cay is too small for vegetation to survive. Tropical storms for long, as in several previous years the cay has been reported as being bare.

The brakers on the reef have been sighted at a distance of 9,5 miles, and in 1976 were identified on the radar display at a range of 8 miles.

In 1981, the stranded wrecks charted 0,5 cable S and 5 cables NE of the centre of the cay were not particulary visible from either NE or SE and the sand cay was sighted before them.
