DL7AYD's Amateur Radio Page

Here you can download my article about VHF/UHF radio propagation basics. The intention is to explain the fundamentals of VHF/UHF radio wave propagation to a "non-engineer" reader by sparing the math behind it. I will focus on the quasi optical behaviour of radio waves in the vicinity of earth. The goal is to get a feeling of radio ranges to be achieved and how to improve them.

There is four sections:

1)

brief look at some curious physical facts we need to know, some of which you can see with your own eyes everyday – but you may not have noticed them yet.

2)

some theoretical but important concepts of radio wave propagation.

3)

practical models of propagation. Some of them are easy to use for quick amateur radio range calculations.

4)

introduction of an excel sheet for quick and easy calculation of radio ranges at your PC.

A spread sheet file is available for very easy estimation of radio ranges. For a detailed description of the spread sheet see my article mentioned above. The last chapter contains usefull hints.
