British Virgin Islands

Playground of yachties, the British Virgin Islands are a quick flight from Puerto Rico or ferry boat ride from the US Virgin Islands (less than a mile away at the closest point!). A curious mixture of American and British influences, car steering wheels are on the left (as in America) but driving is done on the left side of the road (as in Britain).

I have to confess that I was already impressed with the British Virgin Islands even before landing. From the air it looks simply breathtaking.

---------------------------------------

Multimillion dollar homes built high into the hills for commanding views.

---------------------------------------

I enjoy Caribbean architecture, and the omnipresent pastels are always soothing to the eye.

---------------------------------------

Charming Frenchman's Cay, at the southwest corner of Tortola.

---------------------------------------

Sunrise over the Drake Channel.

---------------------------------------

Tortola's road network consists of lots of winding paths through very hilly terrain. Hard to keep your eyes on the road with such fantastic views at every turn!

---------------------------------------

Scenic point overlooking Apple Bay on the northwest coast and the island of Jost van Dyke beyond.

---------------------------------------

More beauty from the northern coastline, this time from northeastern Tortola looking at Guana Island offshore.

---------------------------------------

Looking north from lovely Cane Garden Bay.

Ferries link all of the major islands, so it was easy to jump from one to the other. Here's a view from "The Baths" on neighboring Virgin Gorda
