AERIALS has in place an Automated Emergency backup power system so that the repeater system continues to be available during power failures.
This capability along with the AERIALS NWR Specific Area Message Encoding (S.A.M.E.) based automated Severe Weather Alerting system capability makes 443 a valuable asset during severe weather events for the Monmouth County Amateur Community.
Here is a photo of W2UG working with the old battery backup system as was installed in the old cabinet.
The new AERIALS 443 repeater system is neatly neatly housed in a self contained commercial cabinet that was been upgraded to rest on a heavy duty dolly with bear bearing wheels when we recently installed a new 158 pound 245 Amp Hour battery
Here is a shot of the battery charger on the shelf about the battery, which rests on the bottom of the cabinet floor for maximum strength.
The new battery is just huge, here is a photo of Ed, N2IHN with it in the back of his Ford Expedition.
Here are some close up shots.
This new battery backup system was installed and tested on 14 September 2003.
As can be seen in the following photos, it takes up a fair amount of room within the cabinet, that's Ed, N2IHN testing the battery voltage as we were performing some transmitting tests.
The charger being used on the battery side of the diode isolation bank is a state of the art three bank charger that would support additional batteries is needed.
We utilized all new hardward and cabling, using 6 gauge wire and safty insulated all contacts to prevent shorts.
The battery charger has a lot of smarts, including built in charging indicators for each bank.
The repeater station DC power from the 50 amp astron and the battery backup is distributed via a heavy duty D.C. bus pictured below.
