International Amateur Radio Union Region 1
Motif: Symbolic image of the emission of radio waves of the amateur radio communications Presently there are some ten million active radio amateurs in the world. Out of this number almost three million of them are licensed radio amateurs (the majority of radio amateurs come from the USA and Japan). Licensed radio amateurs are those who hold the permit for keeping their own amateur radio stations by means of which they can hold mutual communication on short and ultra short wavelengths. Every amateur radio station also has its own access code that distinguishes it from other similar stations. The beginning of such a code marks the country where this station is situated, while the letters at the end mark the radio amateur who is the owner of this station and its operator. Thus Croatia is recognized in the amateur radio world since the year 1992 according to the code 9A. In every country the radio amateurs get associated in their national unions and clubs. In Croatia the radio amateurs have been associated in the Croatian Radio Amateur Union (HRS – Croatian acronym). The Croatian Radio Amateur Union is the national professional union of technical culture, a non-party, nongovernmental and non-profit organization that gathers more than 2000 radio amateurs in more than 90 radio clubs across Croatia. The HRS is member of the Croatian Technical Culture Community and the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU). Short history of the HRS • 1924 – founding of the radio clubs “Zagreb” and “Vinkovci” • 1924 – launching of the magazine “Radio šport” • 1945 – launching of the magazine “Radio” • 1949 – official establishment of the Croatian Radio Amateur Union • 1966 – General conference of the IARU Region 1 held in Opatija • 1992 – HRS becomes member of the IARU • 1992 – International Telecommunication Union (ITU) assigned the access code 9A to the Republic of Croatia, under which the Croatian radio amateurs are also working • 1992. – launching of the magazine “Radio HRS” • 2008 – General conference of the IARU Region 1 to be held in Cavtat (November 16 to 21, 2008) National unions are associated in the International Amateur Radio Union that is also member of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) as the world’s highest-ranked body in the area of wireless communications. The International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) is the association of national unions of licensed radio amateurs that represents more than 150 countries and dissociated areas all over the world. The IARU is organized in three regions: • IARU Region 1: Europe, Africa, Near East and Northern Asia • IARU Region 2: Northern and Southern America • IARU Region 3: Asia and the Pacific The International Amateur Radio Union was recognized by the United Nations as a nongovernmental organization and has consultative status along with other UN bodies like the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The International Amateur Radio Union is the regional member of ITU in the radio communications and telecommunications developmental sector of ITU. Three regional organizations of the International Amateur Radio Union cooperate in the work of the regional telecommunications organizations like the Asia Pacific Telecommunity (APT), European Congress of Postal Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT), African Telecommunications Union (ATU) and Inter-American Telecommunication Commission (CITEL). The International Amateur Radio Union organizes and promotes numerous competitions on SW and USW regions. The Union organizes competitions in the Amateur Radio Direction Finding (ARDF) that gather a great number of the young who thus find themselves on a proper road to becoming radio amateurs. The activities of the International Amateur Radio Union also encompass continuous work with developing countries in the promotion of radio amateurism and the related legal regulations in these countries. The Union also systematizes courses for the organization and development of national unions and seminars for national administrations. At the same time the Union develops and harmonizes the attitudes of national unions concerning common issues like frequency areas, optimization of radio amateur spectre usage, standards for transmitters and digital communication as well as the organization of an international system of connections for emergency contingencies. The representatives of the International Amateur Radio Union also participate in the work of the International Telecommunication Union and the World Radio Conference (WRC). By the majority vote of the members of the IARU Region 1 at the general conference held in Davos, Switzerland, in 2005, the Croatian Radio Amateur Union was entrusted with the organization of the general conference of the International Amateur Radio Union Region 1 to be held from 16th to 21st November in Cavtat. The Croatian Radio Amateur Union is going to be host and organizer of the abovementioned conference where representatives of the majority of member countries of the IARU Region 1 will be present as well as the representatives of the management of the second and third region of the International Amateur Radio Union.
