I first heard about the tragedy in the news and then from my aunt. Pero is my uncle and aunt�s close friend.... I read the email he sent to my uncle just couple of days before the accident..... Our national dailies and TV/radio stations reported the attack in W. Timor right after the event happened, although news didn't initially carried the names of the victims. Yesterday, while having lunch with another "UNV returnee" from Timor, I remembered Pero and suddently felt strange. Who would not remember this young man - full of exuberance and commitment to his work. His send-off party (cum 1999 staff day) shall forever be itched on my memory as I sat opposit to him on the table, giving him tips about places to go in Asia for his VARI/MARS. His face glowed as he excitedly took mental note of my suggestions. It's indeed a pity that he met his death in a foreign land and in the hands of the people he is serving. I believe though that Pero's time is up, he has served well. The incident is God's way of having it (death) come to pass. We may not understand it but the Lord has His own reasons for allowing this to happen. May his passing give us who are still toiling, consciousness about the reality of death and our total dependence on God who decides our security even our fate. We are all just temporary passersby in this world. Please convey my deepest condolences to his family and to all our colleagues who once shared Pero's life. Pero, You went to Timor to "...help those people" and when your friends showed concern about the risk you took, you said "I am going there to help them. They would not do any harm to me" But they did. In your last message to Sajal and me you said that with all the security problems you enjoy your work in your "...small pit working with microphones and wires, helping to account the staff..." To the family and friends of my ham friend Pero: Words can't adequately describe my numbness and sorrow at your loss. I talked with Pero at 4W6SP and elsewhere, and appreciated his kindness towards me. Everyone I have spoken to share the OUTRAGE of your senseless loss of Pero and hope for peace throughout the world, which is a prime motive of amateur radio operators, the UNHCR, and certainly what Pero wanted. While I never had the oportunity to do a QSo with him, for me is a very sad situation. My prayers go to his relatives and friends. One of the other UN employees killed was born in Puerto Rico.
