ILLW 2022 - Activation Announcement

12 Aug 2008
Ham radio operators 5B8AP - Andreas and 5B4AFQ - Manos ) are planning to activate the Cape Greco Lighthouse (ARLHS CYP-003) during the International Lighthouse & Lightship Weekend (ILLW) on 20-21 Aug. 2022.

A little history
The Cavo (Cape) Greco lighthouse was built in 1892 whilst Cyprus was under British rule. It is located about 8km southeast of Ayia Napa. For many years the area of the lighthouse was closed to the public, since it was within the fenced area managed by the French company "Somera". Seven massive telecommunication antennas stood in the area used by two broadcasting stations with RF output power of 800KW and 600KW transmitting on 1233 and 990KHz.

Access restrictions and high RF in the area is probably the reason why there are only two recorded previous activations from back in 2005 (5B4/LY1DF on 1-Apr-05 and 5B/DH1PS on 18-Jul-05).

In November 2019 it was announced that the stations would cease operations in January 2020. The area has been returned to the Republic of Cyprus and is now being managed by the Forestry Department. The antennas have been demolished and the area is being restored. Special permits are required in order to access the area.

The plan
This will be a simple activation. We'll use simple equipment - no linear amplifiers or rotating beam antennas - just plain radios (100W max) with vertical, wire or small portable antennas. We'll start operating on Saturday morning (8:00 - 9:00 UTC) and carry on for as long as the propagation and hot weather allows. We are planning to work at least on 10, 15 and 20m bands SSB.

We will be using the special call P3CG (Cavo Greco). QSL via 5B8AP. See QRZ.com for more information.
