ILLW 2008 - Activation Announcement

12 Aug 2008
A team of radio amateurs from Cyprus (5B8AP Andreas, 5B4MF Spyros and 5B4AFQ Manos) is planning to activate the Cape Kiti Lighthouse (ARLHS CYP-004) for the International Lighthouse & Lightship Weekend (ILLW) on 16-17 Aug. 2008.

The plan
This will be a "casual" activation. We'll use simple equipment - no linear amplifiers or rotating beam antennas - just plain radios (100W max) with vertical, wire or small portable antennas. We'll start operating on Saturday morning (5:00 - 6:00 UTC) and carry on for as long as the propagation, hot weather and availability of operators allows us. We'll work at least on 10, 15 and 20m bands SSB. I plan to be the first to arrive at the lighthouse and I will start operating using a small portable antenna. A better antenna will be set up at around noon (09:00 UTC) on Saturday and we will also try to work on the 40 and 80m bands. We will leave the lighthouse at around 17:00 UTC on Sunday.

Each operator will use his own callsign /P. QSL via home calls. See QRZ.com for each callsign for more information. Participation in the event is open, so other amateurs from Cyprus may be joining us.

To get an idea about the location of the lighthouse, here's the APRS position on Google map from my last visit to the lighthouse and also on live Google map.

Hint: Check for 5B8AP-9 on DBOANF.de or APRS.fi to see if I've reached the lighthouse ;-)
I will try to set up an APRS station once the main shack is ready, so you can also check for 5B8AP-12 on APRS.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
