Agalega DXpedition Statistics
We were nearly able to reach our goal, to realize 25% of the total number of QSO's with Hams in North America. We did attain it fully when adding the QSO's with South America. To do that, we concentrated on all the open windows in this direction during our activities. The entire 3B6RF crew is happy to have accomplished this aim. It is very difficult to contact the Indian Ocean from the States. The signals are weak much of the time, and Europe is in between, often covering the weaker signals. We tried very diligently to call NA, but at times found it difficult to break through the European wall. Let’s thank all the Hams who respected our directional calls, and patiently stood by. This we call true Ham Spirit. The undeniable fact is, to use every NA window certainly reduced our total number of QSO’s.
CW was the most efficient mode. We were able to make up to 200 CW QSO's per hour, but the counter very rarely reached 150 QSO’s per hour in SSB mode.
What we learned about discipline on Agalega: We found that the Hams from the USA were the most disciplined. The Hams from Japan lost some of their discipline from three years ago. When we operated from St. Brandon, they were surely the most disciplined; when asking for JA3XXX, only JA3XXX came back!!! From Agalega, this wasn’t always the case. Even when we insisted on NA only, some JA stations kept calling - have they been listening too much to the EU’s?
The discipline of the EU Hams was in most cases better than we expected, but we noticed that there are still a few who should should study the traffic rules for DXing.
When the calling stations followed the instructions of our operators, we found that we could also work EU in a satisfying and efficient manner.
