house1.jpg (45126 bytes) A low angle view from the bottom of the garden. The shack is on the right side of the upper storey. Note the PTZ (Pan, Tilt, Zoom)Video camera on the tower. The antenna on the left is for orbiting weather satellites. The small dishes on the roof are for digital television reception and internet download.

The wire antenna going left from the tower is an all band HF folded dipole. The G5RV is not visible but is inverted from the tower left and right.

shackn1.jpg (43934 bytes) The shack, my getaway and den. The desk on the left is also my office (yes, I'm in my shack every day) The console is all of the equipment a man needs in his shack (try tell that to the wife!) to communicate on almost every mode and frequency.

The amp on the floor (left) is an old RF Communications Linear restored during winter.

mast1.jpg (44355 bytes) The main tower and the modified C-Band dish. The antennas are:

TH3 Thunderbird Tribander

4 El 6M Yagi

G5RV & Yaesu TWD

Ground planes for 2M

4 Stack dipole for 70CM

Corner reflectors for some commercial stuff

Midband Dipoles for more commercial stuff

40M Inverted Vee

And some other bits for Trunked radio and testing in the workshop downstairs

azel.jpg (48044 bytes) The Az-El Array and the dish.

The Az-El Antenna system is a RHCP antenna for UHF, a Yagi also for UHF and a 14 Element VHF yagi. All fed to a pre-amp / relay box just under the rotator.

arrplate.jpg (60629 bytes) The Earthed Entry Panel (EEP)

All antenna cables as well as control cables enter the shack here. The plate is grounded to the mains earth as well as the tower ground with 1" wide copper strap.

All of the antennas are fed with low loss cables such as LMR 400 and Foam Heliax. The white cable is an RG 214 equivalent but made from Teflon and Silver plated copper wire. Loss is the same as Foam Heliax.

We have lots of lightning in Gauteng, I take no chances! The mains power filter and surge protection is also grounded to the plate.

base1.jpg (70790 bytes) Detail of the tower base.

The pipe on the right is the chemical feed earthing system. The pipe feeding it is the overflow from the geyser and the drain from the air conditioner in the shack.

The tower is grounded through the bolts holding it and the cage is bonded to the ground system underneath the cement base.

The copper ground strap runs down the side of the base to the main ground.

STEVE.jpg (34148 bytes) For those of you who don't know what I look like, thats me!

This picture was taken in 1997, so I guess I still look the same! the shack has changed though!
