THE KERMADEC DX ASSOCIATION DXPEDITION TO CHATHAM ISLAND, ZL7C IN 2002.
ZL7C on 2m Moonbounce
On Thursday 24 October the first ever 2m EME QSO to ZL7 was made with W5UN at
10:10z followed by a QSO with KB8RQ at 10:34z. Equipment used at ZL7C was a
single 12 element yagi and tx power 150W, the rig was a Yaesu FT100. The US
stations both have large multi-yagi arrays.
Earlier attempts at contacting W5UN failed due to high received noise levels
at ZL7C caused by many computers, HF transmitters, and other electronic equipment
in close proximity. Moving the 2m antenna to a new location having it pointing
away from the operating position improved the noise situation.
The QSOs were made possible by the use of the JT44 mode of WSJT. This software,
written by K1JT, uses the computer soundcard and is intended for working with
the very weak signals encountered in EME QSOs.
