"CHATHAM   ISLANDS "

These are the experienced Dxpeditioners who will activate and pilot the ZL7C operation:

Team Leader and Group Organiser

KEN HOLDOM

ZL2HU

Licensed 1989

Ken Holdom, ZL2HU ( also ZL4HU and ZK1KH )

At 52 years of age, I am married to Imela (Emily as I call her) and we have one young 8 year old son William, both of whom are joining us on this DXpedition to ZL7. A family photo forms part of this web page.

First licensed in 1989 as a novice as ZL2NBK, I obtained my DXCC in March 1992 and I became fully licensed as ZL2HU in March 1993 just prior to Imela's and my trip to Hong Kong and Japan in March / April 1993. A fantastic trip that will never be forgotten with very fond memories of the incredible Hospitality offered by fellow Japanese hams.

I have been the Group Organiser / Team Leader and QSL Manager of the Kermadec DX Association (KDXA) for the last 8 years.

Our Association has successfully undertaken both the ZL8RI DXpedition to Raoul Island in the Kermadec Group in May 1996 and to ZL9CI, Campbell Island in January 1999. The latter achieving world record status for the number of contacts made during a single DXpedition. We are proud to have maintained this status for two years until the D68C DXpedition in Feb. 2001.

The success of the Kermadec Dx Association has arisen through the tremendous international support we have received over the years which is greatly appreciated. Without this ongoing and continued support the amateur radio fraternity would still be struggling to complete their awards if it were not for the ZL8RI and ZL9CI DXpeditions.

I would personally like to acknowledge the tremendous contributions and support of three ZL members from our original group who have made the DX world the better for us all and who took part in our first DXpedition to ZL8. They are the late Peter Watson, ZL3GQ , the late Ron Wills, ZL2TT and Lee Jennings, ZL2AL. Together these 3 guys persuaded me to continue to provide satisfaction for others that otherwise would not have been possible.

This ZL7 DXpedition is to be my last, despite the many many requests I have had for a further DXpedition to ZL8. Committing almost 10 dedicated years to our hobby, I feel I have done my part and given my very best to the Amateur Radio fraternity.

In saying this our Association would greatly appreciate your financial support towards ZL7 and whilst realising this is not the most wanted country in the world it will be an opportunity to make a contact with many friends both old and new.

Thank you and good DXing.

BOB MCQUARRIE

ZL3TY

Aged 55, I am married to Barbara and have two adult daughters.

I was first licenced as ZL3TAQ in 1963 while still at school in Christchurch, and upgraded to ZL3TY soon after. At this time a lifelong interest in dxing on the VHF bands began.

A move to Greymouth in 1971 resulted in a few years break from radio activities as family and work responsibilities took over.

I resumed the hobby in 1989, my primary interest still remains making long distance contacts on the VHF bands, primarily the 50MHz band.

Currently President of the Westland Amateur Radio Club, NZART Executive Councillor, writes the regular VHF column for Break In.

Recently active on 6m and 2m moonbounce using the latest weak signal digital mode JT44.

WILBERT KNOL

ZL2BSJ

Member KIWI Contest Group.

Wilbert is 39 years of age and has been licensed since 1979. In the bad old days of paper logging and dupe sheets, he was involved with VHF/UHF SSB/CW contesting at club level. In between, DX grid squares were collected on 2 m SSB/CW, from his native country (Netherlands).

Since moving to New Zealand 14 years ago radio activities from home have been restricted to checking into the Pacsats, due to the housing situation. Another favorite pasttime is watching DX spots on the local DX Cluster. In order to get his radio fix, every opportunity is taken to get on the air away from home.

For the past nine years Wilbert has made appearances for the Kiwi Contest Group in the CQWW CW and SSB contests as part of the ZM2K M/M team. Other contests entered into are the ARRL 10 m DX (multi op ZL2DX), ARRL DX, IARU, VK/ZL and most ZL field days as a CW operator. The photo above was taken during a very recent and short landing on Campbell Is. CW is his preferred mode and he hopes the contest experience will be useful in handing out the ZL7 prefix to as many stations world wide as possible.

Outside amateur radio Wilbert is employed as an electronics designer in a small team of underwater acoustics people, developing and using echo sounder equipment for fisheries research. His other interest are sports: he plays volleyball, indoor soccer and is a self confessed mad windsurfer.

STEVE TAYLOR

G4EDG

Steve, aged 44 is qualified in Electrical and Electronic engineering.

First licensed in 1974, he has been active on the HF bands, almost exclusively on CW.

After achieving CW DXCC Honor roll #1 in 1993, he has concentrated on QRP DXing and contesting using home built gear.

Previous DXpedition experience started with OF0MA, Market reef in 1987, followed by T31T, ZK3CW and VK9ML, Mellish reef in April 2002 along with several solo QRP DXpeditions to various Greek islands.
