Westland black petrel (Procellaria westlandica) 48cm,
1100g.
One of the few petrels which still manages to breed on the mainland
despite predation from introduced mammals. A winter breeder they breed
in the forested foothills of the Paparoa Range in Westland. We see them
on our pelagic cruises off Kaikoura, where this picture was taken and Punakaiki
during the breeding season.
