ZK1RS North Cook Islands Dx-pedition
In 1989 and 1992 I had the good fortune to visit my friend Warwick (ZK1WL)
on Penrhyn Atoll in the northern Cook Islands. Here is a photo of the water
front in the main village of Omoka, population about 400. The village lies
right on the 9 degrees south latitude line.
Warwick has lived on Penrhyn since 1985 at the met station in a cosy 1 bedroom
cottage at the right hand side of this picture, with his XYL Manongi and 4 children.
I had the relative comfort of a room to myself, sleeping on a shelf in his 12' x 8'
store room/ice cream shop/ham shack!
As well as several thousand HF QSO's, I activated North Cooks for the first time
on 2M EME. My antenna array consisted of 2 vertically polarised 17 element yagis
which were homebrew versions of the M-squared '2M5WL' yagi made from dimentions
supplied by "Mr. M-Squared", Mike Staal himself. Warwick's 5 element yagi for
6M is in the center of the 2M array.
I used a GaAs FET preamplifier and converter on receive with Warwick's FT-757,
and an IC-290A driving a 2M amplifier using pair of 4CX250B tubes on transmit ...
all accessories were homebrewed of course!
Here is a photo of "my" beach on Penrhyn Atoll ... well, I never saw anyone else
there! Most days I fished from the reef at low tide with a casting rod and spinner
and caught Trevally for our dinner. Each time I went out the fishing was good until
the reef sharks showed up, usually after the second or third fish was caught.
