ZL1RS 2ele Quad for 75M band!
In 1995 I raised several odd bits of tower and mast sections to 110' high and hung
2 diamond shaped quad loops fom a 30' long cross arm to make a 2 element quad for 75M.
I experimented with various methods of feeding and phasing the elements and finally
succeeded in getting it to play ... and play it did! 100 countries worked on 75M SSB
in 5 weeks, and 7th place in the world on 75M in the 1996 ARRL SSB Contest.
Unfortunately gale force winds broke the top mast late in 1996. I tried several
makeshift ways of getting the quad back up but eventually decided to build a more
substantial tower with lattice sections all the way.
The tower site was located near the highest part of our 13 acre Citrus and Avocado
Orchard over looking the harbour and Pacific Ocean. The antennas were fed by 500
feet of 600 ohm open wire line which has a measured loss of only 1.5dB although it
is operated with a 12:1 SWR! Everything was home made in my workshop.
That site was sold in 2001 and I bought another small farm a few km away.
However, now I also have a "retirement" property with a better take-off in the picturesque Bay of Islands.
