WARO NEWS

MAY 2000

Hi All,

Here we are almost half way through the year 2000. This year has certainly been a very interesting one so far. There has certainly been quite a lot of interesting and exciting happenings on the YL scene here in New Zealand.

The Cambridge Amateur Radio Club Market Day was held on May 13th in the Cambridge Town Hall. I must add that the Cmbridge Amateur Radio Market Day is always a great place to meet up with friends from many parts of the North Island. There were a large number of WARO members present and a very succesful sales table was held to raise funds for the YL 2000. We had organised a grocery raffle which went very well.

It was a lovely day and the Town Hall was packed with OMs all very anxious to pick up a bargain.

I think perhaps the OMs are now used to seeing YLs holding a sales table with lovely knitted children's garments crochet hats, YL 2000 pens, jars of jam, many other crafts and plants. This instead of the usual radio and computer bits and pieces that are usual at these market days.

We had a great day amking $253. This was profit on the sales table with another $150 being donated from the Te Awamutu Amateur Radio Club being the prooceeds from their sales table.

A special "Thank You" must go to all the WARO members who have contributed to the sales table, also to the Cambridge Amateur Radio Club for allowing a table free of charge, also to the Te Awamutu Amateur Radio Club for their generous donation. It is very pleasing to see the OMs supporting the YLs in this manner. Thank YOu to all from the YL 2000 Organising Committee.

A very surprised and happy lady from Hamilton won the grocery raffle. A great Day was had by all.

Rosemary ZL1WRO and OM had a great overseas trip being away from New Zealand for around 10 weeks. Their trip took them on a 26 day coach tour of Europe then to UK to catch up with family.

An outing of interest whilst in UK was to the RSGB Hamfest and Hobby Day at Hatfield House Hertfordshire. It was estimated that over 3000 people atternded this Hamfest and Rosemary and her OM enjoyed their time there, they were made welcome by all the amateurs that they talked to.

Rosemary reported that it was very difficault to saying goodbye to family in Britain but there was a new grand daughter to meet in Sydney on their homeward journey. They arrived back in New Zealand with numerous exposed films and a host of happy memories.

It is pleasing to hear so many YLs on the 14.222 net on Mondays at 0530 UTC. The propagation has been really good with YLs being heard from European Countries also Japan and of course the regulars from New Zealand and Australia.

To all those YLs who have not been so well lately, we wish you all a speedy recovery, especially Cathy ZL2ADK, Vicki ZL1OC and Gwen ZL2OI. We all hope that you will all be back to full health before too long.
