Condolences from all members of WARO go to Biny ZL2AZY on the passing of her beloved Mother aged 102 on 8th June 2000. Biny's Mum will be missed by all who had the pleasure of meeting her, a truly great lady.

Condolences from all members of WARO go to Vicki ZL1OC a Life member of WARO on the passing of her beloved husband Colin ZL1CS on 28th June 2000 . Colin was a great supporter of WARO, in the early days of WARO being at one time Patron, also photographer, designer (I believe that Colin had something to do with the design of the WARO badges). Colin had been in poor health for sometime.

To both Biny and Vicki and their families our love and thoughts are with you both.

INTERNATIONAL YL 2000

Just 13 weeks now, and the International YL 2000 will be almost over. There are a great many really excited YLs from all over the world who are really pleased that they have been given the opportunity to be part of the International YL 2000, and the opportunity to visit our beautiful country. Planning is going really well.

Remember that if you are unable to attend the YL 2000 you can still participate by sending a small inexpensive gift for the Kiwiana gift exchange. This can be some small gift handcrafted by yourself.

The WARO members have been busy with their needlework working squares with a New Zealand theme for a quilt which will be raffled. We have enough squares now to make two quilts and two wall hangings. These are really beautiful works of art and will be well worth winning.

Check out our YL 2000 Website and have a look at the great program we have organised. A really fun weekend will be had by all who attend.

There are a party of around 20 YLs travelling to Norfolk Island a few days after the YL 2000 for a week of DX-pedition. Remember to take a listen for them operating from Norfolk Island on Phone and CW.

The Papakura Amateur Radio Club are hosting the YLs and their partners to a Pot Luck Dinner and evening get together at the Papakura Clubrooms on 4th October. A big Thanks to Dave ZL1AMN and Aola ZL1ALE for arranging this.

Check out the 14.222 Net on Mondays 0530 UTC. Many of the YLs who are attending YL 2000 meet there each week. YLs from many European countries along with Japan and Australia can be heard there every week with Dave ZL1AMN being Net Control. Pease join in. Don't forget to take part in the WARO net on 3.695 at 8pm on Monday evenings, you will be made very welcome.

The following article was printed in our WARO June Bulletin and I thought it should be reprinted here for information of all YLs.

The Use of "33"by Jeanne Gilchrist ZL4JG.

Jeanne first printed this information in the June 1992 WARO Bulletin when she was Bulletin Editor. We are most frateful tio her for calling it to our attention. There are now quite a number of us who, having become licensed since 1992, do not know about the correct use of "33"as explained her by Jeanne.

"33"the signature used between YLs is often misused and its origin tends to get lost. YLRL was organised in 1939 and it was at this time that women amateur radio operators seemed to find their niche. "YL"was adopted as a general term denoting any female licensed amateur radio operator regardless of age or marital status.

"33" was originated this same year by Clara Reger W2RUF and it was adopted by YLRL for exclusive YL use. It means "Love sealed with friendship between one YL and another YL."

We are reminded that only with this background and meaning it is understandable that "33"is not only exclusive to YLs but it is never used in the plural. We sign "33" NEVER "33s".

Similarly the often heard QSO closing "73"meaning "Best Wishes"is also not supposed to be used in plural.
