The first photo above is of an adult Spotted Drum (Equetus punctatus) and the second is of a juvenile Spotted Drum. We found the adult at about 35' on the ledge to the west of the western canyon at Lea Lea's Leap. When we returned to try to get some more shots of it, we couldn't locate it again! The juvenile Drum was one of a pair on the inner wall at Cumber's Caves. Wesley and I went back several days in a row and took over 100 shots of those two fish, trying to get the perfect photo. This one is probably the best of the log. The problem in photographing them is that they dash around very quickly, though within an area at most 4' wide. Thus they give the hopeful photographer ample opportunity, but they are so quick that it is difficult to get the camera focused and then grab the shot before they move! Also, the juveniles tend to swim as though "down" was toward the coral head behind them, thus making it hard to get a profile view. Every shot seems to be looking "down" on the fish.
These fish are such exotic looking creatures that they are often used for corporate logos. They really are enchanting to watch swimming about, and they appear oblivious to a diver watching them.
