BANDUNG (1990 pop., 2,058,122) is the capital city of West Java province on the island of JAVA,
Indonesia. About 120 km (75 mi) southeast of Jakarta, the city is a Sundanese cultural and
educational center and has a relatively moderate climate because of its altitude of 768 m (2,520
ft). Bandung's average annual temperature is 22 deg C (72 deg F), and its rainfall averages 2,150
mm (85 in). The city is hemmed in by a series of volcanic peaks covered with tangled upland
vegetation. Bandung is the center of Indonesia's quinine industry, with cinchona grown on nearby
plantations. It is also noted for its ceramics and textiles.
Settled around 1810, the city has grown rapidly in the 20th century. It is the home of the Institute
for Technical Research, the Padjadjaran State University, and a nuclear research center. Just
outside the city is the Tangkubanprahu (Upside-Down Boat), a volcanic crater that can be
entered.
In 1955, Bandung was the site of a conference of 29 African and Asian nations -- the first of its
kind -- which helped prepare the way for the establishment of the NONALIGNED NATIONS
MOVEMENT [KAA].
