XWARN Meeting July 11, 2005
President Mike Crawford KC8GLE called the meeting to Order at 7:30pm
12 members present and two guests
Note: Not enough for a quorum to vote on any issues.
CRACKER BARREL.... Mike Kc8GLE shared that he had been going over the Ham Equipment that his deceased Uncle had. He shared a list of all the equipment and pixs included. He stated it was like going to a museum there was well over 40 pieces of equipment included 150 tubes, tube testers and a lot of old QSTs. Hoping to sale some of the items and someone suggest EBAY. He even had some of the original paperwork and proof of several Patents that his Uncle had applied for.
Mike also announced that Mike Kirlin has received his Vanity Call WX8MAN. He is very interested in meteorology.
Mike says the club sign is now W8XRN
Jim Simpson WB8QZZ shared an email received concerning HOW COMMUNICATIONS WERE USED DURING THE TERROR IN LONDON IN JULY 2005. The email stated how the 800 trunk system was used and how effective it was, being a digital system with discreet communications.
3 NEW MEMBERS joined the Club. Joshua Long KD8BVB, Kenneth Long KC8GDM, and Christopher Bohn N0RZT. They all filled out membership forms.... WELCOME to XWARN.
FIELD DAY...was very successful and as you could see the Picture in the Newsletter Jim and Rick Alnutt were able to fix the Yeasu 757. Charlie Cotterman was able to do over 400+ CW contacts on it.
WAY TO GO CHARLIE...
SECRETARY’S REPORT.... No Quorum to Vote on Changes or accept ion.
TREASURER’S REPORT....
No Quorum to Vote on Accept ion.
TRAILER REPORT... Jim Simpson did purchase a Generator Coleman 8000 Watts surge. It was used at Field Day and did a very good job. Air Conditioning came in very handy when
it was hot and humid that day. Also extra long cable, 10/4 cable in 3 /50foot
each. They used all 150 ft on Field Day.
Mike KC8GLE showed the Weather Station that is installed on the top of the
trailer with the digital monitor that shows rain gauge, temperatures, and barometric pressure. They purchased it for $165.00 was original $440.00 Unit, was purchased from Mike Kalter W8CI, who was able to obtain it for the good price at HamVention.
Bill Taylor questioned why we needed it. Mike stated that it interfaced with Computer, and the Visual Effects are beneficial at Events where the Trailer is deployed. Help keeps the Net Control aware of weather changes, while He is enclosed in Trailer and on the radio. (Most of the weather reports to SkyWarn require instrument readings and this would be beneficial for that purpose.)
EDUCATION...Dave Misek N8NPX wanting to start classes in the fall. More details later.
REPEATER NEWS.... Echo link is up and running, but does have some operating issues - needs to be looked into.
The 2-Meter Repeater. has a 6-10 second delay, seems someone keys the mike and doesn't think repeater is up but it is on low power. Once it up and gets up to full power but intermently drops out. When Jim and Brett have some spare time will be checking it out.
Bellbrook Site. there are some legal issues concerning the Tower, once that is cleared up, then Mike Wolf's son will do some climbing to check it out.
OLD BUSINESS... Mike KC8GLE thanked everyone who came out for Field Day, food was great and Good Time had by all.
NEW BUSINESS. Mike shared that the Awnings Used for Hamvention and Field Days, had seen better days and needed to be replaced with something more ease at putting up and taking down. It was being checked into about purchasing Portable Awnings 20X20, would be about 4 of them about $100.00 each.
Someone suggested how about an attached Awning to Trailer that was also looked into est. $1000 to $1500.

UPCOMING EVENTS.
WRIGHT CYCLING RIDE:
August 13th...there will be 100k
Ride. The Ride will be coming out of Downtown Dayton, with 3 loops out of Xenia
- North, South and East. There will be pre-planning meetings and maps. They are
in need of 30+ operators to monitor the dangerous intersections.
Food will be provided and a donation will be given to the Club in
appreciation. Call Mike Bueller if you
like to help
September 17...Air Force Marathon and Old Fashion Day's Parade. Many operators are needed for both events. Contact Dave Misek and Mike Crawford respectively to help out.
Discussion was made about possibly having a Booth at the Greene County Fair, encouraging the community about Ham Radio and how important it is in emergency situations. Further discussion stated that the Fair committees require someone to man the booth most of the evening hours each night of the Fair. It is too late for this year, but maybe something to consider next year to give us more exposure.
ADJOURNMENT...President declared meeting adjourned.
Respectively Submitted
