WD4NKA Home Page

By Gary Johanson, WD4NKA

Welcome to my web site. I am Gary Johanson, WD4NKA. The purpose of this site is not only to provide an expanding resource of information for the Tube/Valve oriented homebrewer, but also to try my derndest to convince you that anybody can make at least SOME of these devices.

Tubes, or Valves, as my U.K. friends call them, are neither complex or rare components. Some circuits, to be sure, can be tricky. Some are very involved, requiring some background and experience to deal with, but that is not where we are going on this page.

Most of the above referenced projects are either ones which I have actually built, or they come directly from an old handbook or magazine. They are tried and true classics that do not contain any "tricks" or special insights beyond that which any hobbyist might easily possess. The only real warning I would issue from the get go is the presence of higher voltages. Even though Boy Scouts and school kids made these devices, don't let it lull you into a false sense of security. They had to be careful too. All these projects require voltages over 90v DC, and their respective power supplies bring 117v.a.c. in from the wall. There is enough current to do damage, so BE CAREFUL ! But, do not be FEARFUL ! Children should be supervised by an adult at all times when handling these voltages. But with a modicum of care, you should have no problem.
