An EME expedition to South America.

Presented by Bill Olsen, K1DY

To start the new year with a bang, Bill Olsen, K1DY, offered to give our club a slide show on his EME expedition to South America in the late 70's. Bill had volumes of slides as well as plenty of visual aids (as seen behind him) to make a super presentation.
K1DY covering the news releases with the club members.
EME, also known as Earth Moon Earth communications is what VHF'ers have dubbed the ultimate DX. Signals for EME have to travel in excess of 400,000 km for a qso to be made. Typically, less than 7% of your transmitted signal even reaches the earth after ithas bounced off the moon!
This is real "weak signal work" and often requires high power ( in excess of 500W) and multiple antennas ( yagis, quads, etc) to be effective.
There is a wealth of information on the web, including pages from well know EME'ers.

The format of the slide show was very laid back, and Bill took the time to answer any questions that folks had as they came. Most members had never really thought about EME, much less had the chance to talk to someone who went to a foreign country just work EME from it! The discussion took a little over 2.5 hours, but I do not think that many of the folks watching minded, as the amount of information that was being presented was astounding!

Bill had some real good materials, and the club members enjoyed covering all of them with him. Some of the most popular items of discussion were all of the newspaper and magazine articles that were printed in various publications all over the world covering the events that took place during the EME dxpedition!
Here, Bill discusses the trip and the antennas used to Paul, N1BUG. Shawn, (KB1CKT) the W1YA club President from the University of Maine in Orono listens in as well.
