Anacapa

"Anacapa" is derived from a Chumash Indian word meaning "mirage".  Anacapa, actually three islets, is the Channel Island closest to the mainland (17 km).  Its "Anacapa" is derived from a Chumash Indian word meaning "mirage".  Anacapa, actually three islets, is the Channel Island closest to the mainland (17 km).  Its total land area is nearly 1.5 square km.  Anacapa's lighthouse is one of four lights along the 100 km Santa Barbara Channel (Pt. Conception-Pt. Hueneme).  The original skeleton tower light of 1912 was replaced with the current lighthouse in 1932, the last primary light & fog signal in California.  This was my third expedition to NA-144, in May 1999, after Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa, and was the first activation of Anacapa.
