Caribbean DX on 6M in May/June 1997
John Walker WZ8D will be on Great Abaco Is. FL16 in the Bahamas from June 5-19,1997. I
will have 80m-2m. Last Year had 2200 QSOs on 6 and 2 meters. Sent out 800+ QSL cards from
the trip. While there I hope to install a 6 and 2 meter beacon. It is being built by Earl
W8MGJ. Freqs. will be listed when available. They will run about 1 1/2 watts each and the
call will be C6AFP. QSL info is to WZ8D with a SASE.
John is QRV in FL16
50.122, 50.110 4-ele 12ft boom 250watts.2M MS skeds 144.144 Mhz
Thanks to Jerry WA8R I will have a 6 meter beacon to take to the Bahamas. He has
remove his beacon on 50.062 and has replace his call with C6AFP. The beacon will run on
50.062 until the new beacon being built by W8MGJ and WD8ISK can replace it in the future.
There will be know 2 meter beacon at this time. You might want to send Jerry some e-mail
and Thank him for his efforts. Jerry was also the maker of the V44K and the J3EOC Beacons
that myself ,WB8GEX and WA8NJR install over the last couple of years. If you hear these
beacons please e-mail us and let us know. Also I would like to thank Jack AB4CR for
donating the AES Halo for the Bahamas beacon.
John's back 6/20/97 see what we can find out...
This year was a let down as far as six meters goes. Last year I made 2200 QSOs on
six this year only 460 Qs. Looks like I was about 2 weeks early. I did do a little better
on two meter scatter. I worked the following stations. NS4W EM76, N4UK EM84, W8WN EM77,
K8TQK EM89, WA2TEO FN31, KC4YO EM75, WA8WZG EN81, KE8FD EM89, WA8NJR EM79, W4MYA FM07,
KB5IUA EL29, K8GP FM08, KD1DU FN31, AND N4CH FM07. I also was sending s-2 to the following
stations W8TL, W3ZZ, KM0A, VE3AX, AND KA2KQM. This year I also made an E M E contact with
KN6M in Texas. It was on the setting Moon. On 6 I also worked YN6WFM in EK62 . Now that's
a rare one. His home call is JA6VU and he like to operate on 50.125 so look out for this
one. Also worked many KP4s. The 6 meter beacon is also on the air. The call is C6AFR which
is N4JQQ call for the Bahamas. It is on 50.062 and will probably move to a different
location and different frequency in the future. It runs 1.5 watts to a ringo at 25 feet.
Please e-mail me and let me know when you hear it. Steve N4JQQ ( C6AFR) has a very nice
place in the Bahamas. Even though the band did not do much I and my wife Barb had a great
time at other activities. It is easy to get there from the states and only a few miles
from the airport. It cost no more than a Florida vacation but is much better. If you would
like more details about renting Steve's place e-mail me or Steve. ( email@example.com ).
As far as the contest here are my totals Six meters 82 contacts 41 grids. Two meters 17
contacts 11 grids. Score 5,148.. Way down from last Year. I would like to thank the
following for helping to make this trip a success. WA8R, WD8ISK, AB4CR, WB8GEX, WA8NJR,
KB8YKR and the many publications and reflectors. Qsl info is a sase to WZ8D. Thanks John

Joe Pater WB8GEX will be on Crooked Is. FL22 in the Bahamas from May 29 - June 3
1997. Joe will also have 6m staying near 50.125. QSL info WB8GEX.
6/6/97 Joe's back, we'll see if I can get so details on the trip.
Kevin, It was nice to work you on 6m from FL-22 which is, as you know, a very
rare 6m grid. As far as I know, I am the only op to ever activate this grid. Will give you
my log but, as you can tell, had 2 openings; 1 on Sat. & 1 on Sun. Sat. was about 5
min. & one on Sun was an hour long. Unfortunately on the Sat opening I had a great
opening into the midwest but very few takers. I called frequently on 6m day & night
and other than these 2 openings, never heard a signal. all the bands, incl. 6 were very
noise-free. My s-meter would stay right at zero except during severe thunder storms that
passed thru. Had a total of about 1900 qs between 6, sat. and the low bands. On sat. I
worked a lot of stations for a new country and grid square. All my equip, an Icom 736, R-7
vertical and 3 ele. 6 m beam, all worked perfectly.
I certainly look forward to going back for a similar DXpedition; it was an
excellent radio location, only 50 ft. from the ocean with a good place to mount any type
of antenna (even some tall trees for 160m inverted Ls). The small resort we stayed at was
very nice, the natives were excellent & island in general was very primitive to US
standards (dirt roads, no public electricity) yet had some of the best food I've ever
On 5/30, worked on 6M: W3JO, WB3ANT, and WA2FGK. On 5/31, worked on 6M: K1RZ,
W3TC, N4KWX, K2XT, K2ZRJ, WB2TMD, N3VBG, WZ8D, N8ZJN, KE8FD, WVIR, KB8YKR, WA8QNR, K8MFO,
I will be operational on 50 mhz in St. Lucia (J6/W6JKV) from June 20 through June
29. Hope to work all of you. Jimmy,W6JKV
After I worked Mike CY9AA/VE9AA in St. Paul FN97 during a time where there's no takers
describing the 6M setup at about 2300Z 6/29/97. It was open for about 1 HR to W8,5,0 when
I ( N8ZJN )recorded this from here EM79xk. Talking to John WZ8D, Mike W8MM and working a
W5. For those of you wanting to hear it in .wav form E-Mail me and I'll be glad to send it

C6AIE & C6AJR Back to Bahamas Feb.25, 1998
Well, wild man Joe Pater C6AJR /W8GEX /ex WB8GEX and John Walker C6AIE/
WZ8D are going back to the Bahamas again February 25, through March 4. We had a great time
working the Ten Meter contest, and all the Bands, including 400 QSOs on 6 meters in early
December. So we have to get back as soon as possible. Our main event will be the CQ 160
meter SSB contest. The call for the contest will be C6AIE. Of course we will be on all
bands including six meter looking for E, TEP, F2, or what ever six meters will deliver.
Sorry no 2 meters this time. I am still waiting for QSL cards from the printer to mail out
from our last trip. Please be patient, it always take longer for picture QSLs. Jim KB8YKR
has already mailed out all non SASEs and Bureau Cards up to date to the QSL Bureaus..
Thanks for the help Jim. I have about 800 cards with SASEs that will get the new picture
QSL cards when they get in. If you would like to get one of these please send your cards
direct to John Walker WZ8D 1930 Meredith Dr. Loveland, Ohio. 45140-7216. Include a S.A.S.E
for U.S.A. and out side US include at least 1 irc and S.A.E. All cards to C6AJR will go to
W8GEX, EX. WB8GEX 1894 Old Oxford Rd. Hamilton, Ohio 45013. Thanks Hope to work you all on
