A couple of you have asked off-line about where someone
may obtain the IPC standard -

IPC-2221 - Generic Standard on Printed Board Design.

Go to the IPC website where it's available.

  http://www.ipc.org/

In it, there is listed several charts for determining the
current carrying capability of traces. And I believe
these charts were developed emperically.

Please, keep in mind that there are several people here on
the list, Mr. Brooks being one, who have extensive experience
in this and other areas. The IPC standard is only a standard,
a guide at best. Many times, though, experience is the
better the guide.
