I've gotten lots of good responses. I should have mentioned that I have an
experienced team driving "advanced technology" - future product and tool
requirements, etc. This group mentors the tactical team (7 engineers with a
range of experience). I don't have an exact count of the feedback but it
looks like recommendations are leaning toward management experience.
Especially in light of the team which is available for technical direction.

Keep those thoughts coming. I appreciate the input.

Thanks,
Fran

Probably best (but expensive) is a tandem structure.
The technical people report to a techniacl leader who
is the sole direct report to a manager. The manager
interfaces to the corporation. The tech leader interfaces
to the technical people.
