This are my two cents about the guard traces afeir:

In microwave microstrip design you have a tipe of filter like this:

Vin =======================
                              =============
                              ======================== Vout.

Three coupled lines. Roughly speeking, the separation between them makes the
attenuation and the lenght of the central line makes fhe center frequency. In
fact, is when this line resonates (half wavelengh) when the filter works.

I think that puting shorts instead of opens at the ends of the central line
doesn't change a lot and the structure continue beeng a filter.

In the case of the guard traces you have:

external trace ====================================

guard trace *================*==================*

signal trace ===================================

guard trace *================*==================*

And the guard trace acts as the central line of the filter. Acording to this,
the distance between vias will mark the frequency in which the filter will enter
in the pass band. The clouser the bigest.

Thanks,

Joan V. Castell
