I concur with Weston Beal's statements. What we do is push hard on the
ASIC, FPGA, connector vendors to supply accurate models of their packages
and connectors. It's their responsibility to create the equivalent circuit
models. We do use the TDA Iconnect software, linked with the TDR, to create
equivalent circuit models when one is not available from the vendor or to
verify certain models.

                Christian,

Most SI engineers are involved in digital designs. As such,
these teams
usually don't have time nor expertise to create their own
models of
interconnects and components. The majority of SI work is
done with whatever
model the engineer can get ahold of in a moment of need.
Some of these come
from a vendor. Some are just approximations from a
datasheet or guesses
made from experience. There are nice modeling programs
available, but few
people who have the money and the time and the knowledge to
use them
                effectively.

Now, if there is someone who doesn't work like this, we'd
like to hear about
                it.

                Regards,
                Weston

                Dima, Ray,

thanks for your input! However, the relative small number of
replies leads me to the conclusion that most SI-List
listeners
have little experience with equivalent circuit modeling
tools.
So, I would like to ask how you all usually extract circuit
models for e.g. interconnects, packages etc. ? Do you rely
e.g. on formulas as found in textbooks like the
"Transmission
                Line Design Handbook" from Wadell?

                Thanks in advance, best regards,

                Ch. Schuster
