One of the original reasons for avoiding right angle turns, especially on
small trace widths was the under-etch problem during manufacture. As already
pointed out, the right angle turn is insignificant for logic families with
>300ps rise/fall speeds. The RF and lower frequency microwave folk, do
consider right angles as important because it is a 1/4 turn planar inductor
and at those RF/u-wave frequencies, it must be considered. As far as the
impedance mismatch, yes, it exists for the those concerned with switching
edges in the 300 ps or faster logic.
