Michael,
Difinately agree with you. For all our pkg models, the mutual
inductances of wires are used instead of isolated and we always use
field solver to arrive at the values. but isolated models should be
sufficient for 1st order approximation.
as far as i know, simple formulas for mutual inductance only exist
for wire filaments (no radius). Not sure how reliable it is.

We find that values for inductances of wires in isolation don't
mean anything. You need to include mutual inductances of the bondwires
to get a meaningful answer.
formula for inductance of a round wire, isolated in space
(assuming no
curvature):
L = 0.002*length*(ln(2*length/radius)-0.75)
L = uH
