Thanks for the clarification. I agree with your points about how the part is
characterized vs. what may be the resultant AC behavior in the circuit with
clamps present.

Regarding the soft curves of ECL. Your information is to the point about slew
rate through the rapid transition portion of the curve would be misleading if it
included those non-linear portions. But, slew rate is itself misleading if we
imagin the part doing hard switching on and off with a linear ramp connecting
the rails.

Transmission line theory and device switching was well enough understood in 1967
such that those involved understood that simple rise/fall might not suffice for
describing high speed digital circuits. But, I believe high speed switching
technology has been a process of evolution which carries with it a bit of
baggage from previous standards. I also think that at this point we're playing
from several different scripts all at once.
