I think this thread has burnt enough cycles, so at the
suggestion of one of the posters the 'moderator' will state a policy
(even though the list isn't moderated).

Personally, I don't particularly care for cold sales calls
that originate because someone picked my name out of a list or newsgroup
posting. However, once you post to a public forum the posting becomes
public record and others may use that public record for their own
purposes (within reason).

That being said, it appears that this whole discussion started
because someone inadvertently posted a message to a sales guy on the list
instead of using direct e-mail on the back channel. If the message to the
sales guy had been sent directly to him, probably no one would have even been
aware that it happened.

So now the policy:

Vendors are discouraged from culling names from list postings
(even though we know they are going to do it) to use a sales lead
fodder. In the event they feel compelled to get leads from the
list, they are even further encouraged to pursue them OFF the list.

Anyone who has comments one way or another with regards to the
afore stated policy, please communicate directly with me and not on the
list in order to maintain a high signal to noise ratio on si-list for
those interested in technical topics.
