Tip For Drift Problem with Icom IC-746 without having to buy the optional CR-282 "High Stability Crystal Unit" by Chris Cox N0UK

Improving the 60MHz local oscillator stability in an Icom IC-746. This will
improve the 144mhz operation as far as drift on a IC-746

                            1. Remove the bottom cover of the radio.
                            2. Remove the ~5" square plate that partially covers the LO and the board
                            behind it (four screws).
                            3. Gently pack the rectangular shielded area around the 60MHz crystal with
                            a few small cotton wool balls (I used three), being careful not to damage
                            L1901.
                            4. Replace the metal plate.
                            5. Replace the radio's bottom cover.
                            6. Total time took less than 15 minutes.
