Replace battery with supercap. There is room for the supercap near J4 or in the area reserved for the
voice unit. Be sure to cover leads with insulation.
Extended Frequency Coverage
NO! The helical resonator filter provide great selectivity for the 2 meter band. Any extended
frequency mod would require bypassing the filter.
Reduce LED current
The LED is driven hard for maximum brightness. Replacement LEDs are not available.
The LED supply drive regulator is a hack at best. R67 is often burned up and
damages the circuit board. The voltage to the LED is 6 volts plus the voltage drop
across D42.
Reduce the LED voltage to 6V. On the underside of the Logic Board, jumper (short out) D42.
Repair the DISPLAY
It is possible to repair the display by removing the spare LEDs on the panel and
using them to replace burned out LEDs.
TS selects 5kHz or 15kHz
Change the TS switch to select between 5 and 10 kHz.
The service manual layout for the EF Unit is FUBAR.
Leave D9 alone.
The diode next to D9 should have the cathode connected to the top pad instead of the bottom.
The diode below D9 can be removed.
Scanning Speed
D79 can be removed to slightly increase the scanning speed.
Additional changes
On the Logic Unit - remove D85, and the diode on the underside going from
Pin 9, IC 7 to cathode of D33 (Y8 to A2). D85 in sets the band center to 147,
out sets the band center to 146. The diode on the underside sets to scan stop
on squelch.
