I operate QRP both by choice and by necessity - being
restricted to indoor antennas that are not "optimum", the use of
higher power could result in interference to my fellow building
tenents as well as possible over-exposure to RF to myself and my
family. But, even if I did have a decent outdoor antenna
system, I would still operate QRP as I think it is a challenge and
provides the best "return on my investment".
I started QRP operation up in Michigan, but since my move
to Missouri two years ago, I haven't been active. I am now
reconstituting my station and have set the following goals and
standards for myself:
1. Push the RESET
button: I have decided to start from scratch with all of my
QRP award goals. I have ARRL DXCC, WAS, WAC, CQ Field Award,
CQ WPX, VUCC on 6m, 2m and 222MHz as well as a couple of other
awards. However, all of these were acquired with power levels
well over the QRP limit. So, I wil start a new log with only
QSO's made from my QTH here in Cape Girardeau. I will only
pursue QRP specific awards from QRP-ARCI or other QRP
organizations.
2. Use only homebrew or kit-built rigs and major
station components. I do not anticipate or plan on buying any
"factory" epuipment such as rigs, tuners, keyers or other
items. And nothing I build will exceed the recognized QRP
limit of 5w CW / 10W SSB.
3. Try to operate in as many QRP contests as I can
and submit logs for them.
4. Improve my CW to the point that I can
comfortably operate during the ARRL November Sweepstakes CW.
Also get to the point that I can use a bug for my contacts.

QRP-ARCI
Now a word about QRP-ARCI: QRP-ARCI is
the pre-eminent organization for the QRP community in the United
States (and perhaps the world!). Think of it as the "ARRL for
QRPers". They publish an excellent publication,
the "QRP Quarterly" that is full of FB information for the
QRPer. They also sponsor several contests as well as operating
awards specifically designed for the QRPer. Dues are $20 a
year for the "QRP Quartely" as well as full membership benefits.
The more active members that QRP-ARCI has,
the more that they can do for the QRP community - so if you are an
inactive member, then re-up; and if you have never been a member -
join up!
