SKYWARN

Our club is active in storm spotting.

Skywarn is a group of volunteers working with the National Weather Service to spot and report severe weather. It is totaly volunteer public-service work and it's membership is open to all who wish to participate. The National Weather Service travels throughout the state to conduct Skywarn training seminars. Amateur radio operators as well as law enforcement officials and other emergency response officials attend these seminars. Family and friends are encouraged to attend so they will know how to protect themselves and their families during times of severe weather.

You can find skywarn operations in the Red River Valley on the 147.060(+), 146.700(-), and 145.47(-) repeaters. They are hot-linked at all times and cover the valley pretty well in our NWS Doppler pattern area. The National Weather Service operations are run out of the Grand Forks office by the Greater Grand Forks ARES group. The call sign used on the Weather nets by the GGFARES is NØGF. You can learn more about that group on their website.

We also hold a weather net on our local repeater. If the storm is severe enough we hold a net, and our net control operator reports in to the NØGF net to keep traffic at a minimum. Our club station is at the LEC.
