" My Final Frontier in Ham Radio ( As I call it )"
Having done about all the different types of propogation you can do on 2 meters and after
about 40 years of mostly VHF and UHF work. I decided I would look into trying EME and learning about this way of communication. Well I finally worked my way up to a small station by some people's standards which at first I had only one 4218 cushcraft.
I was heard off the moon with it but I didnt hear anything from other station.
I found another 4218 and stacked them vertically. We started running skeds
with DL5MAE, who has to be one of the most patient persons I know because
after 2 years of trying we still havent made it but as long as he wants to try
we will also. He and others have been helpful along the way also. But never did I get
from him what I already knew would be better " you need more than those antennaes" or it wont work if your preamp isnt on the tower . It was " maybe next time " or" be patient my friend." Then I did something that I said I wasnt going to do ( we dont listen to ourselves very good, do we?? )
I upgraded from a Commander II to an 8877 W6PO type amp. instead of bigger, more antennaes.
I have pretty good feedline its ( I know 1 7/8 " would be better but its what I HAVE ) RG389/u about 160 feet of it to tower but I tell myself and others put your money in your receiving system FIRST cause you cant work em if you cant hear em.
Now Wolfgang is hearing me almost every sked and I have finally copied 3 "o's"
from him.
I then found an AZ EL Rotator ( which is called R2D2 because of its apperance and similarity of a" Lost in Space TV show charactor
K2ERG Al had it but wasnt sure he wanted to sell it . I really think it was
the name R2D2 and his affection to it and program HI HI.
Well we finally got it all up with the 2 x4218 cushcraft stacked horizontal. With R2D2
for elevation and it seems to work fairly well and If I ever get calibration better I think it will do a good job for me and it didnt cost me the price of a new radio either. ( Thanks Al )
Well now Joe K1JT comes out with this program WSJT which is for High Speed Meteor
and JT44 which is a very weak signal program. At first I wanted to do it the old fashion way
as I had done all these years but then decided we would do it but keep them seperate I.E grids, states and which mode.
Joe and I worked with about 1 watt per 100 miles " hey, not too shabby huh?"
With my station and with preamp still in shack I began copying signals off the moon and it sure was a thrill to watch it decode those signals.
On 11/14/02 my first ever EME contact was via JT44 and with S52LM Milos in Slovienia
During EME contest on 11/23/02 my first CW EME contact was with I2FAK.
Well you might ask why am I telling you this ?? It is something that really felt
good to me and I want others to share it also. I hope this will encourage other even smaller
stations to give it a good try especially JT44 mode . when you set a goal and even though there are dissapointments along the way DON'T GIVE UP!!!! ( Thank you Wolfgang)
As one ham told me " when the excitement is over, its time to move on"
