From the President's Shack
I don't know about you but I'm looking forward to getting some cooler weather. Judy and I were just up to Seattle for the 2003 Microwave Update and it was 80 degrees and no rain. Nice for that area but still like summer. The banquet speaker was ARRL 1^st VP Joel Harrison, W5ZN who talked about getting younger people into amateur radio. We had a graying crowd of hams from all over the world present, JA's, DL, VE, VK, G's. Yes we need to some how get the interest of youngsters to take a look at our hobby before we move on. The upcoming Jamboree-On-TheAir is another opportunity to encourage youth to have a ham radio experience and maybe get interested in joining us. Some of the kids maybe interested in the technical part of the hobby, others may be into computers, still others maybe looking for another way to communicate with friends other than mom's cell phone. If you know of some youngsters or maybe a grand kid, invite them over to your house to show them what you do. Or out to the JOTA experience.

Board of Officers Meeting Minutes
Meeting was opened by President Bill, WA6QYR

Technical Assistance Committee: Greg, WA7IRW reported monitoring spectrum at Pheip's place W6PTH to try to determine source of signals causing Intermod on his radio. No super-strong signal was detected... several in the -45 dBm range (an FM broadcast and a pager) that could likely cause the IMD frequency sum/difference.

Radio Frequency Interference Committee: Bill, WA6QYR. No activity to report

Public Relations Committee: Phelps, W6PTH. No activity to report.

Mike, WA6ARA proposed to reduce member dues if they elect to receive the Airwaves' via email. It was thought that a reduction from $20 to $17 was appropriate. This is to be voted upon next meeting.

Renewal Committee: Jerry's Renewal committee. Nothing new to report.

Nomination Committee: A request was made for volunteers for the Nomination committee but no one volunteered.

VE Exam: scheduled for Oct 11 at the Library at 0900.

Emergency and Public Service Committee: Jerry Brooks, KK6PA is moving ahead with providing planning for activities with ARES RACES. There were sign-up sheets in the back of the room.

Kiwanis Walk-a-thon on 20 Sept. Need about 7 hams to help out Greg WA7IRW is the one to contact.

Picnic in the Park bicycle ride needs volunteers for Sunday 2l Sept.

Jamboree-on-the-air is coming 18 October 9-3-need some helpers in addition to Greg, Phelps and Bill. Greg WA7IRW talked about the simple key/sounder project he has for the youth to assemble and solder during the event. It was proposed and voted to reimburse Jerry, KK6PA for the parts being procured.

The California Office of Emergency Services Wednesday morning net on 40 meters has been running smoothly despite up and down propagation.

Hal, KM6JM is planning a training session on packet and message writing coming up soon.

Emergency Net control -The net has moved to the 147.00 MHz repeater for a trial period.

Repeater Committee: ---Bill's Report---
The Rand link transceiver is ready to be installed at Randsburg. Now the project is to get the software in both repeaters to agree and control working. Then we can link the two machines. Phone line is in the list of action items to the 147.00 machine.

Program Committee: Dennis W6DWF introduced Mike, WA6ARA who had a video presentation on the problems presented by the Broadband over Power Lines (BPL) proposed to the FCC. Mike also talked about the no code proposals before the FCC. Following Mikes talk it was proposed and voted upon by the membership to send $500 to the ARRL Spectrum Defense Fund related to the BPL issue.

Phelps W6PTH won the 50-50 drawing for $8.50

147 Repeater Status
September has been a busy month. Along with control and coaxial cables that I ran to the pump house, I ran a 150 ft of 6 pair shielded phone line. It continues on over to the repeater shed. I have to get it connected up to the spare phone lines at the house then get the phone company to connect up my second line. Mark Ball donated some excess sealed lead acid 12 v batteries to the repeater standby power system. Elvy, N6LV donated some paint for the outside of the shed. Now to get a day when we can schedule folks out to paint it. I have been listening to the input to the repeater during net time and have noticed that stations being noisy into the repeater, I cannot copy on my home base station with a 20 ft high extended Ringo antenna. So either the repeater receiver antenna combination is better than mine or I'm being desensed.

IWV Emergency Net
On 1 September we moved the IWV Emergency Net to the 147.00 machine. Unfortunately it just isn't up to the task at this time. So, after much discussion and consideration we are moving the net back to the 146.64 translator. The time will be the same (7:30 pm on Monday nights) and will be proceeded by the ARRL Audio News. The plan is still to eventually move the net back to the 147.000 machine but we will only do so after the repeater is operating properly and the link is up. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Picnic In The Park Report
The Sixteenth Annual Picnic In The Park Ridgecrest to Kemville bicycle ride was on Sunday 21 September. The day, which started at 6:00 am for SARC Hams, was a warm and beautiful day for the ride. Sixty-nine riders and sixty-nine bicycles, no tandems this year, began the ride between 6:30 to 8:00 am from Leroy Jackson Park. The first rider reached the picnic in Kemville's Circle Park some time after 10:00 am and the last arrived after 4:00 pm.

There were no emergencies, not even a first aid event. One flat tire was repaired by NØLV with a tube provided by T J Frisbee's bicycle shop. The usual bits of confusion keeping track of riders caused by them giving wrong rider numbers and not showing up without notifying the ride organizer were overcome by multiple rider records and radio borne queries, as to who/when/where.

The BBQ chicken, baked beans, vegetable and fruit salads and various types of juices and sodas were enjoyed by most of the supporting Hams. These were Dennis Farrell W6DWF, Greg Roush WA7IRW, Hal Hazel KM6JM, Elvy Hopkins NØLV, Bill Manatt KE6NHO, Bruce Ornsten N8RXJ, Todd Evans W6TOD, Dave Stone KC6UUR, Pam Evans KC6UUS. Gary Johns KEC6E was standing by for call-up in case of a dropout. WA6IRW and KE6NHO set up the SARC portable repeater in the upper, ragged reaches of Yankee Canyon. It worked flawlessly all day, thanks to Greg's continued work on improving it's antennas and coaxing the controller to do what it is supposed to do.

We Hams received many thumbs-up and thank-yous from riders on the route. Ride organizer, Ron Farris, remarked as to how many riders had voiced their appreciation for Ham participatian. Thanks to those communication ambassadors who participated. I hope to see you again next year.

Jamboree-On-The Air!
Jamboree-On-The-Air is coming on 18,19 October. Greg, WA7IRW; Phelps, W6PTH and Bill, WA6QYR are planning some activities for the Boy And Girl Scouts that are invited to attend. Greg had a telegraph sounder and key last year that the youngsters liked. This year he has some other activities. Another part of the event is allowing local youth to talk with others across the county using Amateur Radio. Plans are in the works. If you would like to join the fun, or have some other youngsters that would like to participate please let Bill, WA6QYR, know 375-8566.

ARRL Audio News
Every Monday night, just prior to the IWV Emergency net, Mike, WA6ARA, retransmits the ARRL Audio News on 146.64 simplex. This is a great source of amateur radio news and a good warm up for the net. So check it out, at 1910 local time (7:10 p. m.) on 146.64 MHz. This is transmitted on the SARC translator output frequency but in simplex. Done so that we don't have to worry about timing out the repeater.

We are also looking for other Amateurs who would be willing to share the job of retransmitting the news. It is simple enough, just need to download the news from the ARRL web site, and, with a simple to build interface, re-transmit it at the appropriate time.
