From the President's Shack Welcome to the New Year. I hope you made some "New Years Resolutions". One might be to clean out all that junk on the shelf. Another might be to help out with some of the SARC community communication events. Or you might just become more "radio active" on the bands. Either way you will want to keep that resolution in mind and go do something about it. Set aside a few minutes of each day to act on that resolution or it just becomes one of those "gee, I wish I had done that" again. The SARC renewal committee under Jerry Brooks's leadership came up with some ideas that have been put in action. I hope we can continue to improve the activities and events of the club to make it a better place to help others become "radio active" or serve our community.
I hope to see a larger crowd at the installation dinner at the Texas
Cattle Company on north China Lake blvd at 6 pm on 14 January. We
will gather in the "party room" and order off the menu. Following
dinner we will install the new officers. The next item on the agenda
is the "brown bag exchange". This is where everyone brings some of
that stuff on the back shelf in a bag and exchanges it for some one
else's bag. It keeps the stuff from growing too large on the dark
shelf. Next we will make sure every member who has purchased dinner
has a free ticket to the drawing. More tickets can be purchased for
$5 each. There are 3 AES gift certificates up for winners followed
by a new Yaesu VX-2R dual band HT.
Board of Officers Meeting Minutes
The December 10, 2003 board meeting was called to order at 1908 hrs. Those present: Pres. Bill Burns (WA6QYR), 1st Vice Pres. Phelps Ter Heun (W6PTH), 2nd Vice Pres. Dennis Farrell (W6DWF), Treas. Pam Evans (KC6UUS), Secy. Tom Ingram (WB6EPD) and Airwaves Editor Mike Herr (WA6ARA). Bill will send a letter to the Heritage requesting a room for next years meetings. SARC will support the upcoming Boy Scout campout in April 2003. The Board of Officers Installation dinner is planned for the second Wednesday in January at the Texas Cattle Company. A number of items relating to this dinner were discussed including door prizes. The first ticket for the door prizes will be free. Additional tickets will be $5.00 each. The HT will be the last prize to go. Paula Herr (N6VGW) agreed to run for the office of 1st Vice president. An Audit committee is needed for the SARC annual audit. Phelps Ter Heun agreed to serve on the Audit Committee. There are horse rides in January and February. The planned program for this evening has been cancelled due to a computer malfunction. The meeting was adjourned at 1924 hrs.
Minutes of the General Meeting
The 10 December 2003 meeting was called to order by the President, Bill Burns (WA6QYR) at 1936 hrs at the Heritage Inn. The Sign-in sheet was started around Announcements: 50/50 tickets are available. Refreshments were provided by Paula Herr (N6VGW), Pam Evans (KC6UUS) and Paula Gibeault (N6OQQ). The Treasurers Report is in the newsletter. There was no request for Technical assistance during the past month. SARC will support the Boy Scout Camporee in Keysville in April 2004. It will include Boy Scouts from Kern County. The Over-The-Hill Track club held a race on 7 December. The Coso Junction Horse rides were successful. Everything went well. Club members running for office for the next year are as follows: President - Bill Burns (WA6QYR), 1st Vice-President - Paula Herr (N6VGW), 2nd Vice-President - Dennis Farrell (W6DWF), Treasurer - Pam Evans (KC6UUS) and Secretary - Tom Ingram (WB6EPD) A motion was made and seconded to accept the above candidates. The motion carried. There will be an Audit Committee meeting next month. The SARC Officer Installation dinner is scheduled for 14 January at Texas Cattle Company at 6:00 PM. There will be door prize and a gift exchange. Door prizes include 3 gift certificates plus the VX-2R HT. Every SARC member present will get 1 free ticket. Extra tickets may be purchased for $5.00 each. Programs are needed for the next 8 meetings. Dennis Farrell went over some of the past programs. Several ideas were presented but more are needed. Greg Roush (WA7IRW) provided the program on APRS. Greg showed a compact APRS system he is building. Paula Gibeault won the 50/50. There were 17 amateurs at the meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 20:15. January Meeting / Installation Dinner !
The January SARC / Installation dinner will be held at the Texas
Cattle Company "party room" (located on north China Lake Blvd).
on January 14, 2004 at 6 pm. The dinner is low key and families are
invited / encouraged to come. This year SARC is sponsoring door
prizes. The Grand prize is a Yaesu VX-2r dual band 1 w HT with 500
KHz to 1 GHz receive. There are also two $25 AES Gift Certificates
and one $20 gift Certificate as well. SARC members who come and buy
their dinner will receive one free ticket. Other tickets can be
purchased for $5 each. And of course, there is always the grab bag
"gift exchange" too. It's a good way to collect and get ride of
some ham junk." Come join the fun and good fellowship.

SARC Public Event Support !
December Over The Hill Track Club Foot Race Race Started at 0700 Attendees were: Lloyd WA6KZV, Fred Moses KG6STR, Hal Hazel KM6JM, Dave Stone KC6UUR, Bruce Ornsten N8RXJ had flat tire compliments of our local bushes. And Hospital Drill Feedback.... This year's RRH drill was short and sweet. We were active only for about an hour to hour and a half. Phelps made contact with three hams on 40 meters as a simulation for establishing communications links to other high desert hospitals. Bill Burns was dispatched to the RPD. Dennis Farrell and myself were given messages by the drill coordinator to hand out. The messages were treated as if we had received them and were passing them on to the hospital personnel. RENEW-RENEW-RENEW-RENEW-RENEW It's that time of the year again, SARC membership renewal. Seems like we all only did it a year ago, doesn't it. So why? True enough, the repeaters are open and available to all, SARC membership or not. Meetings are the same, member or not, come on over. Ham radio is that way. So why SARC membership? Well, supporting SARC supports the repeaters we have, and makes it possible to add more. SARC meetings are a place to learn, meet others of similar interest and have a good time. SARC is your local connection with the national organization, ARRL. And with all the attacks on spectrum, BPL and the like, we can use all the help we can get. Have a technical problem, SARC has members who can help. The same for interference. SARC has become a focal point for various public service event in the valley as well. A new and / or renewal membership form is included in this newsletter. You may notice it is a little different from past years. Several members asked why the form was so long, or why did they need to keep adding the same info. Why indeed! The BOO listened and came up this the new form. We are only collecting the information we really need. If the information hasn't changed since last year, fine, just include your name and call (and a check) and renewal is done. Don't want to waste a stamp, fine bring it to a SARC club meeting, better to the SARC Officer Installation Dinner! ARRL Audio News Every Monday night, just prior to the IWV Emergency net, Mike, WA6ARA, re-broadcasts the ARRL Audio News on 146.64 simplex. This is a great source of amateur radio news and a good warm up for the net. So check it out, at 1910 local time (7:10 p.m.) on 146.64 MHz. This is transmitted on the SARC translator output frequency but in simplex. Done so that we don't have to worry about timing out the repeater. I'm also looking for other Amateurs who would be willing to share the job of re-transmitting the news. It is simple enough, just need to download the news from the ARRL web site, and, with a simple to build interface, re-transmit it at the appropriate time. If you want to volunteer please contact Mike, WA6ARA at herr@ridgenet.net Looking for News! I'm always looking for local news for and about the IWV amateur radio community. I would like to have actual articles, not a "why don't you write an article about xyz" I'm the editor, not the writer.
