Ode to the Wahoos -'99

'Twas the end of the old millenium,
And the first year of Michael Vick.
The Hoos were hot and heavy,
"Bring on those Hokie Hicks!"

For the Hoos were ready to rumble.
The Hoos were ready to fight.
Things were looking up in C'ville.
And the future was looking bright.

For the Hoos had bested BYU.
The Hoos were on a roll.
The Hoos had Heisman runner Jones.
The Hoos they all had soul.

Ol' George figured he'd trick those Hokies,
And not play at the end of the year.
He'd play them at mid-season,
And hope that no one would hear.

The only thing uncertain.
The only thing unknown.
Who would show on Saturday night,
To knock those Hokies prone.

Would they come from U.Va at Charlottesville?
With fire and smoke in their eyes.
Or would the team that did show up,
Come from The University of Virginia at Wise?

The game began with a flurry.
Hoo fans let out their moans.
The Hokies put up fourteen points.
The Hoo defense stood like stones.

But the Hoos came back like champs of old,
And Hoo fans renewed their hope.
Could this be like last year?
Or were they on a slippery slope?
At the half they were down by twenty-one.
But true Hoos had nothing to fear.
For hadn't they come back from worse,
When they let out their Good Ol' Cheer?

But the second half didn't turn out well.
For the Hoos from The University at C.
The empty stands spoke volumes.
This comeback was not meant to be.

Coach Welsh was having a TV fit.
He was livid from head to toes.
Every time the camera panned on him,
Ol' George was picking his nose.

At the end the stands were emptied,
Of the Hoos that had come to cheer.
But they were very grateful that,
This whipping wasn't the end of the year.

As the end came for the Hoo faithful,
They let out one last little sigh.
The Hokie fans sang one more verse of,
Hey, Hey, Hey, G-o-o-o-odbye.

Oh, somewhere Hoos are happy,
And somewhere Hoos are gay,
Somewhere they sing the "Good Ol' Song",
To dear Ol' U.Va.

But in the year of ninety nine,
The Hokies showed their class,
To usher in the Y2K,
THE HOKIES KICKED THEIR ASS!

An Old Hokie
