Harbor Freight Trailer modified to carry Kayaks.
A six foot 2 x 1/2 piece of steel purchased for $30.00 which was just the right size for this modification.
Next testing with u bolts. All seems to tow nicely and the tongue
weight is not heavy, it is there but does not break the back
lifting as my old trailer did.
Next step is to get the new piece tack welded to make sure it will not move in time.
The electrical was simply made longer by cutting and splicing in new wires.
The kayak carriers were purchased used on ebay thule brand, now they came with the other parts to put on a car top. which were resold on ebay, original cost of these was $175.00 with the parts sold dropped the cost to less than $80.00 so this ended up being a nice kayak trailer.
Best fit seemed to be a few pressure treated 2 x 4s mounted
with threaded rod to the trailer bed. NOTE These will not last
long in Florida, so will replace them with galvanized bolts at some point in time.
The pictures pretty much show you all that I did and you may have
ideas for your rig.
I have been looking for a few years for used sea doo trailers and simply could not find any at a resonable cost so this ended up being the way for me to go.
Original cost of trailer at Harbor Freight well under $200 with
a 20% discount coupon. I also elected to get the heavy duty model as I wanted the bigger tires, Probably not necessary but for the extra few dollars figured would be worth it.
Daily update..
Thanks for the input guys/gals, some of which I will use !
The extention will be welded, just have not got to it yet.
The straps " I tend to over engineer things " Drives the wife
nuts at times..
The eyebolt in front is used to use a "Dog holder Y which
we used with our Golden, two clips attach to front of kayaks
and the third to the eye bolt.. this forms the "Y" I mentioned.
the point of it is if fast stop etc, this restrained any forward
movement of the kayaks. Overkill I know but.
The idea on adding to the 2 x 4 is good, As you can see by added
pictures I have done so.
Last photo is "finished" this is with Extended tongue now
welded in place and a few coats of black paint.
Off to another project. Hope you get some use of this one.
Thanks again.
