>From the President-KB9JTL
I now have in my possession the three legal documents
from the Tabor Grain
folks that it takes to give them an easement on our property.
The documents
are what we agreed to with a couple of exceptions, which
I will talk to Jeff
about. We will probably need to have a special meeting
for an acceptance
vote. I will wait to schedule the meeting until after
the final details are
worked out because I have no idea how long that might
take.
There is a couple of scouting events in October that the
SRRC will be
participating in. As usual your help is needed. Both
events Oct 14th & 15th
and Oct 21st & Oct 22nd will be field day style from
what I understand. The
14th has to do with outdoor / wilderness survival and
the 21st is Jamboree
on the air. We will have more details at the September
meeting.
I will be having more hand votes at the meetings when
the vote is not
unanimous. The yea and nay plan, although faster, can
be misleading. This
fact was pointed out to me at the last meeting by one
of our former
presidents who is more experienced at these matters than
I am. Thanks KC9NL.
We still have the opportunity to have some Red Cross training
if anyone is
interested. I forgot to bring this up at the last meeting.
Let me know if
you are interested.
73 for now. This is KB9JTL and I will be listening.
SRRC August meeting in Leonore-KF9NZ
It was voted to hold a 50/50 drawing in connection with
the hamfest.
Tickets will be $1.00. KB9UIU will print the tickets
and we will begin to
sell them right away. Club members ARE eligible!
We agreed to buy current copies of "Now You're Talking"
for the 10 libraries
where we have found that the present books have been
loaned. We voted to
again hold the LST Special Event Station this December.
REPEATER HAPPENINGS-KF9NZ
The PL functions are not working. The new service
monitor the club acquired
blew a voltage regulator. Parts are on order.
Without the monitor, it is
just about impossible to set the sub-audible tone levels
to make the PL
system work. Until the monitor back is in working
order, you will be able
to access the remote receiver without a PL tone, and
the CW ID from the
remote site will be retransmitted. Please leave your
PL tone ON! Once this
system is aligned properly, the remote ID will not be
retransmitted since
the remote transmitter will not send PL tone when it
ID's.
We need to hold a repeater maintenance committee meeting
soon and make some
basic decisions. For the time being, let's leave the
repeater at Etna Road
and consider two more remote receive sites - one North
(Mendota area) and
one West (Peru?), but this will depend partly on how
well the remote site
works at Tabor Grain. Eventually, we can turn the
Etna Rd receiver off, and
bypass the resonant cavities. Etna Rd will then be the
transmit site - at
150 Watts!
No one showed up for the Saturday (12AUG) antenna party.
We need an active
member to be Equipment Chairman, and we should make some
decisions about how
things are going to be done. Such as:
1. Take the HF triband beam and rotator off the existing
tower.
2. Put the Comet UHF/VHF vertical on top
3. Remove the guys from the tower.
4. Relocate the remote receive equipment and both antennae
to the Tabor
Grain site.
5. Mount the new HF beam on the roof on the rooftop tower
How does a repeater committee & equipment committee
joint meeting on Aug 28
sound to
everybody??
Here is the budget as revised and adopted:

Amateur Radio assistance needed for October 4th drill.
Every two years each Nuclear Power Plant holds a graded
exercise. LaSalle's
will be Wednesday October 4th. It typically runs
between 9am and 1pm.
During the last two exercises, local hams helped out
at the Grand Ridge,
Brookfield, Seneca and Manlius townships and also at
the Etna Road EOC.
There have been many favorable comments from local, state
and federal
officials on the superior volunteerism and professionalism
exhibited by our
Amateur Radio Operators. Training will be 25SEP
in Ottawa. Contact KF9NZ
if you would like to help.
ARRL Certification
The American Radio Relay League has been working on certification
programs
for Amateur Radio Operators. You can view a draft they
are working on for a
certificate in Emergency Communications at

FEMA'S Independent Study Program http://www.fema.gov/emi/ishome.htm
FEMA's Emergency Management Institute (EMI) Independent
Study(IS) Program
consists of self-paced courses designed for both the
general public and peop
le who have emergency management responsibilities. Each
Independent Study
Course includes lessons with practice exercises and a
final examination.
Those who score 75 percent or better are issued a certificate
of completion
by EMI. The average course completion time is 10-12 hours.
It is possible to
earn academic credit and retirement points for completion
of these courses.
IS 2 Emergency Preparedness, USA
This independent study course contains information about
natural and
technological hazards. Participants are led through the
development of
personal emergency preparedness plans and are encouraged
to become involved
in the local emergency preparedness network. The text
is accompanied by
illustrations, maps, charts, and diagrams.
IS 3 Radiological Emergency Management
This independent study course contains information on
a variety of
radiological topics, including: Fundamental principles
of radiation, Nuclear
threat and protective measures, Nuclear power plants,
Radiological
transportation accidents, Other radiological hazards.
Hazardous Materials: A Citizen's Orientation, IS-5
This independent study course provides a general introduction
to hazardous
materials that can serve as a foundation for more specific
research. The
course has five units and has been designed with the
objective of helping
the individual to: recognize the dangers posed by hazardous
materials,
identify places where hazardous materials are likely
to be encountered,
understand when a hazard may exist, contact the appropriate
persons or
agencies to give or receive specific hazardous materials
information,
identify procedures to minimize personal and community
exposure to hazardous
materials.
Basic Incident Command System, IS-195
The Incident Command System (ICS) is recognized as an
effective system for
managing emergencies. Several States have adopted ICS
as their standard for
emergency management, and others are considering adopting
ICS. As ICS gains
wider use, there is a need to provide training for those
who are not first
responders (i.e., law enforcement, fire, or emergency
medical services
personnel) who may be called upon to function in an ICS
environment. This
Basic Incident Command System (ICS) Course will begin
to meet that need. The
course has been developed as self-instruction but can
also be delivered,
with the use of an instructor, in a classroom. The course
includes a large
number of scenarios, examples, and opportunities for
students to apply what
they have learned.
Radiological Emergency Response, IS-301
The goal of this independent study course is to provide
a learning
experience in which participants demonstrate a comprehensive
understanding
of radiological protection and response principles, guidelines.
IS 394 - Mitigation for Homeowners
This independent study course is designed for homeowners
and small
businesses to introduce them to mitigation and assist
them in: identifying
the natural hazards which affect their community, determining
the hazards to
which they are most vulnerable, determining what potential
risks could
affect their home during disasters, determining which
mitigation actions
they should undertake to reduce the risk of potential
damage to their
family, home and property from disaster. This course
provides the homeowner
with non-technical mitigation techniques for the home,
both pre-disaster
(preventive) and post-disaster (corrective) that will
reduce disaster costs
and the impacts of natural hazards.
Emergency Response to Terrorism: Self-Study (ERT:SS) (Q534)
This course is a self-study, self-paced, paper-based
document and is
designed to provide the basic awareness training to prepare
first responders
to respond to incidents of terrorism safely and effectively.
After
completing the course, students who successfully fulfill
the evaluation
requirements will be eligible for a FEMA/BJA certificate
of training.
