Starved Rock Radio Club Monthly Equipment Chairman Report
May 2001Greetings,I have a few new and existing items
to report on for this
month. For starters, we have obtained at Rohn 50-foot
antenna tower, free of
charge, for use by both the two-meter vertical and two-meter
beam antennas
for the SRRC packet station, located at the SRRC clubhouse.
This tower
should be erected sometime later this summer, and can
also be used as an
additional anchor for at least one of the main towers
guy lines, and may also
be used to support any additional antennas erected for
the club's use at a
later date. I will be ordering the 16-channel VHF
pre-programmed GE packet
radio from packetradio.com sometime in the next several
weeks. Kurt (KB9RKU)
and I have devised a list of 11 frequencies to be programmed
into the new
packet radio, but we still need 6 more.
Channel
Frequency 1 145.010 - LAN default frequency and
SRRC packet bb
2: 145.030 3:
145.050 4: 145.070 5 :
145.090 6 : 147.555 7:144.970
8:145.590 9: 145.630
10 : 144.390 11: 144.910
If you have any additional
suggestions for active packet
frequencies in this area, not included in this list,
please contact me ASAP.
I will add them to be programmed into this radio, as
we still need to pick 5
additional frequencies to have programmed into this packet
rig. Also, please
continue to watch the reflector for a date, soon forthcoming,
to have an
antenna party at the clubhouse. We will be removing
the existing HF beam and
erecting the new Mosley TA-33M HF antenna at this antenna
party, as well as
removing the no-longer functional 2 meter Yagi beam on
the existing tower.
At the next meeting, I will introduce a discussion to
repair the guy cable
pole(s) that have been leaning for some time now.
We have several ways of
going about this project, including removing at least
one of the poles all
together and using the new tower bottom as a guy anchor.
I have had several
different proposals on this, and I am leaning towards
going to a ground
anchor kit system as Frank (KF9NZ) proposed. At
any rate, please attend the
June meeting with ideas/suggestions for completing this
project. That's all
the news I have for this month, as I hope to again see
everyone at the
Hamfest on June 3rd.
May meeting happenings
Jesse, KB9TMA announced that a 50-foot Rohn tower was
donated and delivered
to the clubhouse. He will place the order for the
GE radio set up for packet
in a few days - now that he has the free list from KB9RKU.
Joe, KB9EZZ told
the members he will be out of the Country on Field Day
and someone else will
have to take up the slack. There was discussion
about the menu, but no
decisions were made.
Jerry gave the hamfest report, and the move to Mendaota
was considered. It
was decided that the 2002 hamfest will remain in Princeton,
but that within
10 months (March 2002) we will decide upon where to hold
the hamfest in 2003.
We will also consider moving the date ahead a week.
N9PLJ will make up a
questionnaire for vendors regarding their preferences
for both the place and
time. N9ZJK will survey those vendors who have
tables at this year's event.
The cost of tickets to the 2002 hamfest was considered,
and after several
votes, it was voted to make it the same as this year.
It was voted to buy 300 cases of soft drinks. N9ZJK
will sell the excess
unopened cases at a profit
Jerry reminded the members to get the 50-50 tickets to
him as early as
possible on hamfest day, and to not forget to put their
name on the back of
the stubs they sell.
KF9NZ told the members he hopes to have the new power
amp within a week, and
the new receivers within a week or two.
KC9NL asked for help in moving to his new home in Streator
after the 25th of
this month.
It was voted to postpone the June meeting one week to
the 11th of June (The
regular meeting day is the day after the hamfest)
The new door and autopatch codes were announced.
The listing of delinquent
members was read.
KB9EZZ showed the results of his research on our property
lines. It was
discovered that LaSalle County ha recorded it improperly,
showing the
property we gave to the Village of Leonore as ours, and
ours as belonging to
the village. Due to the fact that the Village
does not pay real estate
taxes, there is no penalty to us. There are other
errors in the records
however, and these will have to be corrected eventually.
A letter of commendation to AA9VR from the Maia group
was displayed. Paul got
the highest possible score on his GROL license exam (commercial
operator
license)
Jerry, KB9MGO showed a list of equipment that W9ZEN's
daughter is putting up
for sale. See a part of the list below.

I'm looking the 3-tape study series for the General Exam.
I left the 3-tape
video series at the SRRC in Leonore. There is a
gent at the Ill Veteran's
Home just itching to upgrade to General and he would
like to borrow our
tapes.
Please let me know if you are done with them and how
I can pick them up.
73 and thanks
Joe
